FUN FACTS:

* Hokie Stone, formerly called "our native stone" is dolomite that the University mines at its own quarry near Blacksburg. The quarry provides eighty percent of the stone used in campus construction.
* The Pylons above the War Memorial Chapel represent: Brotherhood; Honor; Leadership; Sacrifice; Service; Loyalty; Duty; Ut Prosim.
* The VT Duck Pond is a favorable picnic spot on campus. It is also home to the annual "Mudbass Classic," a free fishing tournament which has mostly been held annually since 1983. The first tournament organizers used the name "Mudbass" in order to popularize the common carp for local anglers.
* Cassell Coliseum is considered one of the best home courts in all of college basketball. It is named for Stuart K. Cassell, who spearheaded the project. The architects for the project struggled to find a design for roof support that were within the budget. Laminated wooden arches were chosen as the key support and are now a celebrated feature of the building.
* The VT students were originally called "Gobblers." A student started the tradition of having a live turkey present for every football game in 1913. The tradition of the live mascot continued into the 1950s. In the 70s and the 80s the mascot transitioned to "the Hokie bird."
* VT claims to be one of the three public universities in the nation with both an active corps of cadets and "civilian" lifestyle on campus.
