  • The Forgotten Story of Amanda Thorp: Nickelodeons and Black Vaudeville in Richmond, VA

When I first looked at the building located at 18 W Broad, I KNEW it would be mine. It was so strange, but I felt a cosmic connection of sorts.  I couldn’t make sense of it - and I couldn’t let it go. A 2.5 year long story made short, I bought the building and reached out to a Richmond historical page on Facebook and asked for help to discover its history. That’s when I met Kathi Wong.  Kathi initially started researching the building, which has a wonderful history of it’s own…but it didn’t take long before a story began to unravel about an early occupant of the building - Amanda Thorp. After two years of research, I’m overjoyed with pride that the story has been turned into a book!

  • Small Businesses, Big Results: Quirks of Art

Quirks of Art originally began in 1997 as Kinks, Quirks & Caffeine, with Jennifer Raines buying the location after the death of her mother in 2005. At the time, Raines was working in pharmaceutical sales but knew her calling since childhood was in the ownership of an exciting and innovative local retail store. In 2011, the store became Quirks of Art and recently moved its gallery to Prince George Street in the heart of Williamsburg’s downtown area. “Over the years we’ve really grown to love our little tribe of locals and visitors who support us and all of our crazy schemes,” says Raines.
